First Day Hikes: Celebrate the New Year with Adventure Across U.S.

Winter Hike

Kick off the New Year with a First Day Hike at one of America's state or national parks. This annual event is part of a nationwide effort by America’s State Parks to inspire people to enjoy the outdoors.

First Day Hikes began in 1992 at Blue Hills Reservation in Massachusetts. The idea spread and more parks joined in the tradition. The goal is to encourage healthy living, an appreciation for the outdoors, and time in nature.

Now, hundreds of free, guided hikes are held annually on January 1 across all 50 states. This event offers a wonderful opportunity to exercise, enjoy nature, and appreciate local parks. In 2023, almost 55,000 people celebrated the New Year by hiking more than 133,000 miles collectively.

State park staff and volunteers lead each First Day Hike, sharing their expertise and passion for nature and the outdoors. The hikes vary in length and difficulty depending on the park, but they are all designed for the whole family.

Find participating parks, hiking tips, and why this tradition is an ideal way to start your year.

Celebrate the New Year in the Great Outdoors with a First Day Hike

From scenic trails to wildlife sightings, First Day hikes provide a great beginning to the year. Think about making a New Year's Resolution to spend more time outdoors, explore parks, or exercise, and kick-start your goal with this tradition.

  • Each park provides gear lists and safety recommendations. Please follow these guidelines carefully.

10 Tips for First-Day Hikes

  1. Wear Layers: January weather varies across the U.S., so wear layers you can add or remove as needed. Include a waterproof outer layer for unexpected rain or snow.

  2. Wear Proper Footwear: Choose sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes with good traction to handle various terrains. Remember wool socks for cold climates. Check the instructions for your hike. Spikes or snowshoes may be required.

  3. Bring Water and Snacks: Carry a reusable water bottle and energy-packed snacks. Staying hydrated is essential.

  4. Check the Weather: Check the local forecast and park conditions in advance. Some hikes are weather-dependent.

  5. Carry a Backpack: Use a small backpack for essentials like water, snacks, a first aid kit, and extra layers.

  6. Pack a First Aid Kit: Include basics like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications.

  7. Arrive Early: First Day Hikes are popular and may attract large crowds, arrive in time to park, layer up, and prepare for the hike.

  8. "Take only pictures, leave only footprints": Stay on designated paths, respect wildlife, and carry out all trash. Follow your guide's instructions. And, always remember to, "Take only pictures, leave only footprints."

  9. Consider Trekking Poles: If your hike includes uneven terrain or snowy conditions, trekking poles are a great tool to provide stability.

  10. Stay Connected: Bring a fully charged phone or GPS device for navigation and emergencies.
