How to Participate

  • Choose how much time you want to allow for the hunt. You may work on it over many days or even a year, or you can focus on site exteriors and entrances to achieve all sites in a day or two.

  • Solve the trivia clue to identify your destination.

  • Visit the location and take a photo to earn points.

  • Complete the specific challenge at each location for bonus points

  • Add up your points to earn your Gateway Explorer rank


Scoring:

  • Photo at the destination: 15 points

  • Completing the challenge: 25 points

  • Total possible points: 1000 points


Explorer Ranks:

  • Diamond Gateway Explorer: 800+ points

  • Platinum Gateway Explorer: 600-799 points

  • Gold Gateway Explorer: 400-599 points

  • Silver Gateway Explorer: 200-399 points

  • Bronze Gateway Explorer: 100-199 points

St. Louis Scavenger Hunt Clues and Challenges:


1. 630-foot-tall Monument

  • Clue: The tallest man-made monument in the United States was designed by Eero Saarinen. The museum at this attraction is free.

  • Challenge: Take the tram to the top and snap a photo of your group pointing to a landmark you can see from the observation deck.


2. Historic Court Decisions

  • Clue: Built in the Greek Revival style, site of one of the most important court cases in American history when Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom. Visiting this site is free.

  • Challenge: Find the restored courtroom where the Dred Scott case was heard and take a photo while learning about its significance.


3. Blues Legacy

  • Clue: Located on Washington Avenue, this museum preserves the rich history of a uniquely American music genre that flourished in St. Louis with famous musicians including Scott Joplin, Chuck Berry, Miles Davis and Tina Turner.

  • Challenge: Record yourself trying to play a 12-bar blues progression and take a photo with your favorite blues artist's exhibit.


4. Mars Rover Replica

  • Clue: This museum houses a Mars Rover Replica, dinosur fossils, a planetarium, and hands-on exhibits. Visiting this museum is free.

  • Challenge: Build and launch a paper airplane in the Makerspace gallery and photograph it in flight.


5. 6-foot-tall Horses

  • Clue: Home to the majestic Budweiser Clydesdales and the former home of a U.S. President, this free attraction brings visitors of all ages.

  • Challenge: Take a photo feeding lorikeets.


6. Father of Rock and Roll

  • Clue: This statue on Delmar Boulevard immortalizes the "Father of Rock and Roll" in bronze, performing his famous duck walk.

  • Challenge: Take a photo mimicking the duck walk pose and find three nearby Loop attractions.


7. Victorian Home

  • Clue: Built in 1851, this was the home of a wealthy fur trading family. Now a museum, it is preserved exactly as it was in the 1880s.

  • Challenge: Take a guided tour and photograph your group recreating a Victorian-era pose.


8. 600,000-square-foot Shoe Factory

  • Clue: This "museum" is a an imaginative wonderland housed inside of and outside of a former shoe factory, featuring repurposed architectural elements and the world's largest pencil.

  • Challenge: Try the 10-story slide and snap a photo at the bottom.


9. Home of 11 World Series Championships

  • Clue: Home of 11 World Series championships and the Rally Squirrel, seats in this stadium offer views of the Gateway Arch.

  • Challenge: Take a photo with the Stan Musial statue and find all retired Cardinals numbers.


10. 175-feet diameter Geodesic Dome

  • Clue: Founded in 1859, this attraction features a geodesic dome Climatron® and North America's largest traditional Japanese garden.

  • Challenge: Take a photo with the koi in the Japanese garden.


11. Over 200-Year-Old Market

  • Clue: French Market selling fresh produce, meat, and specialty items since 1779.

  • Challenge: Purchase ingredients for a local recipe and photograph your favorite vendor's stall.


12. Grand Terminal

  • Clue: Once the world's largest and busiest train station, this magnificent landmark was opened in 1894. It is now home to an aquarium and a spectacular light show.

  • Challenge: Find the "Whispering Arches" and take a photo on the stairs.


13. Oldest Cathedral West of the Mississippi

  • Clue: Located on the Mississippi riverfront since 1834 and dedicated to the King of France, this cathedral offers free tours.

  • Challenge: Find and photograph three different architectural elements that make this church unique.


14. King of Beers Castle

  • Clue: Since 1852, this facility has been brewing America's favorite beer in distinctive German-style buildings.

  • Clue: The cobblestone streets and renovated 19th-century buildings in this district evoke the riverfront heritage of St. Louis.

  • Challenge: Find the oldest building and photograph its architectural details.


18. An 1868- City Park Paradise

  • Clue: The Victorian pavilions and meandering paths of this historic park exemplify 19th-century landscape design.

  • Challenge: Visit three different pavilions and photograph their unique features.


19. Home of the Ice Cream Cone

  • Clue: This pavilion at the I'm a 1,300-acre park celebrates the 1904 World's Fair and 1904 Olympics, and the birth of the ice cream cone. Where am I?

  • Challenge: Rent a paddleboat on the Grand Basin and photograph the Art Museum in the background.


20. Reflecting Glory

  • Clue: Featuring 8 fountains and a large reflecting pool, this is the iconic centerpiece of Forest Park.

  • Challenge: Take a photo capturing the fountain's spray.


21. 1874 Engineering Marvel

  • Clue: Upon its completion in 1874, this structure was the world's first steel-truss bridge and held the record as the longest arch bridge.

  • Challenge: Photograph the bridge from three different angles highlighting its revolutionary design.


22. Serving Root beer since 1947

  • Clue: This local landmark has been making root beer since 1947. Now you can dine in their restaurant on the Delamr Loop and watch as the beverage is bottled.

  • Challenge: Take a photo of the bottling factory.


23. Military Tribute

  • Clue: This free museum honors St. Louis citizens who served in America's military conflicts.

  • Challenge: Find and photograph three different memorial elements that move you.


24. "Spirit of St. Louis" Sister

  • Clue: Find the sister plane to the Spirit of St. Louis.

  • Challenge: Take a photograph of the plane at this free museum.


25. Fountain Celebrating Missouri and Mississippi Rivers
