But on our most recent trip, we wanted something a little different—quieter, more peaceful, and surrounded by nature. That’s exactly what we love about The Constellations at Table Rock Lake . These cabins feature many special touches, from romantic lighting to luxury amenities for a comfortable stay. Just 20 minutes from the Branson Strip, these beautifully designed A-frame cabins are tucked into the woods, offering couples a relaxing escape under the stars. Designed by Ozark Mountain Vacations , every detail of these cabins is curated for comfort, connection, and rest. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we could truly unwind. The cabins feature cozy mood lighting, a loft with actual swings, a telescope for stargazing, and a fireplace that adds just the right touch of warmth. The bedroom is peaceful and romantic, with soft lighting, a plush mattress, and doors that lead straight out to a private deck with a hot tub, where we spent our evenings soaking under the night sky. The kitchen had everything we needed (even spices and coffee beans!), fully stocked for cooking. In the evening, we chose to grill outside. For breakfast the next morning, we made eggs and toast, enjoying breakfast with a view. Elwood, the World's Tallest Concrete Gnome, Ames, Iowa Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa, is a lovely botanical garden approximately thirty miles north of Des Moines. In addition to a beautiful indoor butterfly garden and manicured grounds, the gardens are also home to Elwood , the world's tallest concrete garden gnome. The 15-foot tall, 3,500 lb gnome is a delight to visitors of all ages. Reiman Gardens  at Iowa State University is a beautiful botanical garden worth a visit. The butterfly garden is a favorite tranquil spot to watch a variety of butterfly species. The gardens are home to over 6,000 plant species, with something to enjoy year-round. Admission is charged. Cross the High Trestle Trail Bridge in Madrid, Iowa. High Trestle Trail Bridge in Madrid, Iowa The High Trestle Trail , a decommissioned railroad line turned multi-use trail, is one of the most famous trails in Iowa, spanning 25 miles through five towns in four counties. This paved trail is a favorite for cyclists, walkers, and runners alike. The most iconic landmark on the trail is the High Trestle Trail Bridge spanning the Des Moines River. The bridge is 35 feet tall and 2,640 feet long. As you cross the bridge, you may read signage that shares local history. Artistically, the bridge is decorated with forty-one steel frames to represent support cribs within a historic coal mine. At nighttime, the frames are illuminated with blue lights marking the location of the river channel below. Bridge Lighting Hours: April-Oct, sunset - midnight. Nov-March, sunset - 9 pm. Tour the tallest Dutch windmill in the United States. Vermeer Windmill, Pella, Iowa Vermeer Mill  is an 1850s-style Dutch grain mill that has been at home in Pella's historic village since 2002. Visitors are invited to tour the five-story mill and learn how grain is ground into flour. You may even purchase a souvenir bag of flour in the gift shop. Guides teach visitors about the process, you learn about the various types of wood used to build the windmill and why each wood was selected, and children try to lift flour bags. A highlight is standing on the windmill deck where you can see the town below, Pella's canal, and shops. Admission to the windmill also includes admission to the miniature Dutch Village display and the historic village which includes Wyatt Earp's home, a blacksmith, a grist mill where corn is ground into cornmeal, a bakery, and a wooden shoemaker's shop. Attend Dubuque's Winter Arts Festival and watch snow sculpture in action. Dubuque, Iowa , is a riverfront town famous for its charm. Every winter, weather permitting, they host a Winter Arts Festival in February and guests have the opportunity to watch artists create sculptures in the snow! Dubuque is also home to the world's shortest and steepest railroad. The Fenelon Place Elevator , a funicular railway offers views of the town below. The ride operates from April to November. After logging thousands of miles with four kids (my oldest is currently 19, and has been traveling since infancy) in tow, we've learned every trick in the book thanks to much trial and error. Traveling anywhere from 90 minutes away to multiple day/cross-country trips. These aren't just tips – they're sanity savers. Road Trip Planning & Preparation 1. Plan drive times around nap schedules for little ones or meal times.  On many trips, we've opted to leave super early in the morning, knowing our kids will sleep the first few hours (pack as much as you can the night before). We strategize based on the ages of our children. Pack pillows and make it cozy. On the other hand, we opt to stop and sleep at night for drivers rather than going straight through as neither my husband nor I can sleep in a car. It is important to have a rested driver. 2. Don't trust Google Maps Drive Time estimate. Keep in mind that these estimates are based on driving straight through without stops for gasoline, food, and rest. My husband drives, and I research and navigate. In some cases, you can go 10-15 miles further for a nicer rest stop. Thanks to Google Maps, you can read cleanliness and safety reviews. Some stops are epic roadside stops. On I-90 in South Dakota, we always stop at the Dignity of Earth and Sky Statue  for photo ops and the cleanest restrooms in the state. We often picnic on the road, and sometimes it's nice to eat at a table (I keep a picnic tablecloth in our bag) instead of eating in the car. Some stops have family rooms, playgrounds, or picnic areas. If you are traveling in a rural area, research in advance. Tip: Dignity is on I-90 between exits 263 and 265 at the Chamberlain Welcome Center (mile marker 264.4) in South Dakota. 4. Book hotels with indoor pools for overnight stops. After a long car ride, my girls love burning off energy in hotel pools. Bonus Tip: Young children are often happy to eat a sandwich and swim rather than go to an expensive restaurant. Serve the kid's picnic food and pick up a nicer to-go meal for parents at a steakhouse or Chinese restaurant near your hotel. Young children don't mind. Or, split a pizza at the hotel. After long drives, sitting and waiting in restaurants can be hard on kids. 5. Keep a detailed packing list on your computer.  Update it after each trip with things you wish you'd brought (or didn't need). We have two annual trips we take as a family and lots of camping trips. I keep all packing lists on my computer and use last year's list as a starting point for each new trip. Car Organization 6. Give each kid their own "fun bag" for the car.   It's their command center for the trip. Have each child pack their favorite books and activities. 7. Buy simple brown lunch sacks at the Dollar Tree and keep them in your car. We use these sacks to split up portions of snacks, keep collections or souvenirs, or store trash bags that we can discard at the next gas station. 9. Do a quick clean-up at every stop.  Toss garbage in gas station trash cans. Don't let it accumulate. 10. Keep quick cleaning supplies within arm's reach of the driver's seat. Pack a roll of paper towels, a box of tissues, and cleaning wipes Smart Packing on Family Road Trips 11. Pack clothes in reusable packing cubes  by outfit , including underwear and socks. Label it with the child's name and day. 12. Bring a separate bag for swimsuits, flip-flops and towels. Or, apply this to play clothes or pajamas. If you may be stopping before the hotel or cabin, have these items ready. 13. Pack an "immediate needs" bag for overnight stops  so you don't unload everything. We pack a small duffel for our one-night stops before our weeklong cabin stays. Hygiene items, a quick change of clothes, etc, are ready to go, so we don't have to unpack the entire vehicle before our final destination. 14. Pack light .  During extended trips, we bring half the clothes needed and use washers and dryers at our accommodations, doing laundry mid-week and before returning home. It's nice to come back with clean clothes. Laundry sheets  are a great go-to for lightweight packing to wash clothes on-site. Tip: Follow our 21 Tips for Packing Light for road trips and air travel . 15. Bring twice as many wipes as you think you'll need. They clean everything from hands to car seats. Snackle Box Snacks & Drinks for Kids on Road Trips 16. Pack shareable healthy snacks.  We choose a variety of savory and sweet snacks, from homemade granola bars to crackers and beef jerky. For items in larger bulk packaging (less expensive than individual portions, we use brown paper lunch sacks to share. 17. For fun, let the kids pack their own Snackle Box . Pack water bottles.  Bring refillable water bottles  for hydration. Also, freeze recyclable water bottles to keep in the cooler; they become ice packs, keep the cooler cold, and provide emergency refills. Consider an igloo water cooler for refills. 19. Choose a fun rest stop and try a new thing. On our trips to southern states, the kids love stopping at Buc-ee's, where they indulge in Buc-ee Nuggets, every jerky imaginable, fabulous BBQ sandwiches, and other fun foods. Wall Drug in South Dakota is an emphasis must-stop on I-90. At these fun pit stops, it's fun to find something new to try. Set a budget in advance. 20.   Choose Non-Perishable Options  – For longer trips, bring snacks that don’t require refrigeration, like trail mix, jerky, or crackers. Entertainment on Road Trips 21. Download audiobooks in advance . Chronicles of Narnia, Adventures in Odyssey, and other great stories have gotten us through multiple cross-country trips. The anticipation is half the fun. Amazon also sells affordable options. In "20 Questions," one player thinks of a person, place, or thing, and the other players take turns asking yes-or-no questions to figure out what it is. The players can ask up to 20 questions, narrowing down the possibilities based on the answers given. If someone correctly guesses the object within 20 questions, they win; otherwise, the thinker reveals the answer. Buc-ees is our favorite stop. Managing Bathroom Breaks 31. Use Google Maps to plan breaks. Read reviews on cleanliness and accessibility. Buc-ees is our favorite stop when available. Their restrooms are famously clean and spacious, with hundreds of gas pumps and more snacks and goodies than you can imagine. 32. Schedule stops every 2-3 hours, even if no one needs to go. Stretching the legs and rehydrating are important. 33. Prepare for upset tummies. If a passenger is prone to car sickness, have a bucket available (we purchased a giant tub of pretzels that came in a canister with a lid, that canister is useful on trips). Discourage reading or other activities that add to motion sickness. Bring saltine crackers and Tums - whatever works for you. 34. Have cleaning supplies and changes of clothes accessible for potty-training children. Be prepared for emergencies. We permitted pull-ups on long road trips when we were unsure of the next stop. It is typically unsafe to stop on the shoulder of the road, and we avoid it if possible. 35. Pack extra wipes and toilet paper. Sometimes in rural areas, rest stops are not stocked. Have extra supplies ready in case. Keeping the Peace on Family Road Trips 36. Follow the Golden Rule. Don't allow name-calling, rudeness, etc. The Golden Rule sets the tone.   37. Establish clear car rules before departure. On some trips, we rotate seats to refresh seat buddies. Sisters like to play games or share books. We found that rotating pairs allowed for variety. 38. Keep everyone fed and well-rested as much as possible. Most (not all) grumpiness can be avoided if everyone is well-fed and well-rested. Snack wisely (don't binge on candy), take rest breaks, and get a good night's sleep. Vacation is to be fun, not stressful. Having a plan in place for food and rest makes a big difference. Keep a consistent bedtime routine, even on the road. 39. Take turns choosing entertainment and establish time for activities. For example, engage in a group activity for a certain period, then provide some solo time for the same duration. This ensures a balance for both introverts and extroverts. 40. Have a signal (like a special word) when the driver needs absolute quiet for navigation. More than once the girls have been in the middle of a sing-along, game, or loud conversation and we needed quiet to focus on navigating through a difficult section of downtown highway interchanges (looking at you Dallas and Chicago), having a quick "keep quiet so we can focus" signal is very helpful. Car Comfort 41. Bring small pillows  and blankets for each child . You may need to establish rules for this to limit space (our giant teddy bears don't go on trips). 42. Pack sleep masks for early-morning drives.  That early morning sun can be intense. 43. Keep extra hair ties, headbands, combs, and clips handy.   I have four daughters and they often choose to ride with their hair down and fix it en route or before stops. Have supplies handy in one kit or glove box. 44. Bring affordable sunglasses for everyone.   The sun moves, and kids can't always adjust their seats. 45.   Consider removable window shades for naptime.  These are very useful and can also help avert road sickness. We've found that when driving through forested mountains in the Ozarks and Smokies when the leaves have fallen and the sun is low (fall and winter), the flashing light can increase motion sickness. These shades help. Food & Meals 46.   Pack a lunch cooler and a snack cooler  or a meal cooler and drink cooler.  Keeps organization simple. 47. Bring enough food to get started , then order groceries en route. We pack two coolers with many of our meal items (i.e. ,  made-ahead breakfast burritos, chili, etc) to start our trips. We typically stay in cabins or campsites for long trips and order carryout groceries to pick up right before our final destination. This keeps the car from being crowded along the way, and we don't have to worry about refrigeration on 15- to 24-hour road trips. I keep a menu on my computer and a shopping list and often order while we are in the car. 48. Use Apps to Save Money.  If you do choose to stop at a fast food or pizza restaurant, many times you can save money with rewards and discounts on the app. 49.   Pack "hotel room meals" for nights you're too tired to go out. Keep standards like bread and peanut butter, tuna, and crackers, or your family's go-to accessible. Book hotels with free breakfast when possible. 50. Bring plastic tablecloths for picnic stops.  Gas station tables aren't always clean. Tech Tips 51. Download offline Google Maps of your route. In rural areas, we've experienced limited signal (i.e. Wyoming on the way to Yellowstone, Arizona on the way to the Grand Canyon), and it is nice to have paper maps and offline maps for backup. 52. Keep a car charger for every device you're bringing. You may also choose to label these with masking tape or color coding. 53. Bring a portable battery pack for emergency charges. Tip: Use our Guide to Travel Gadgets . 54. Download educational games that tie into places you're visiting. There are many apps and games for the National Parks, NASA, and various fields of history and science. 55. Schedule screen time so you don't overuse it. Remember to take breaks from screens to simply look out the window, play tactile games, talk, or rest. Car Maintenance 56. Get your car serviced before long trips. Check the tires, oil, and AC. 57. Keep basic tools and emergency supplies accessible  (not buried in luggage). Purchase a portable tire pump  and battery jumpstarter  (especially a good idea in rural areas) and keep it in the car. 58. Know how to change a tire with kids in tow.  Practice at home. 59. Keep insurance and registration info easily accessible. Take photos and store them on your phone as well as physical copies. 60. Have a roadside assistance plan that covers the whole family. We use AAA. Health & Safety 61. Pack a First Aid Kit .  Add items you may need for your location, the season, or your family (for instance ,   pain relievers, allergy meds, etc). Keep it accessible. 62. Write emergency contact info on index cards for each child. We placed emergency information in each child's bag and inside their shoes where they could find it. It was not visible to strangers, but they could find it if needed. 63. Take photos of children each morning in their daily outfits.  This is helpful if separated in crowds. On our Disney vacation, we plan themed outfits for each park. Navigation & Timing 64. Plan interesting stops every 4 hours. Apps like RoadTripps, TripIt, and TripAdvisor  are great resources. 65. Keep a paper map as a backup. Many tourist centers offer free maps and magazines. 66. Research historical markers along your route. Learn about your destination and route. Emergency Preparedness 67. Keep cash hidden in various spots in the car. 68. Have physical copies of important documents. 69. Know hospital locations along your route. 70. Keep a list of medications and allergies for each family member. 71. Have a plan for separation at rest stops or attractions. Yellowstone National Park Making Memories 72. With its proximity to several Tennessee and North Carolina cities, free admission (pay for a parking pass) easy highway access, beautiful scenery, and numerous entrances, there are many reasons this park and the surrounding area is a popular vacation destination. The Smokies are a favorite for our family because they are famous for their blue smoke, beautiful vistas, black bears, waterfalls, fireflies, and cozy Southern charm. Go Whitewater Rafting on the Pigeon River Whitewater Rafting on the Pigeon River in North Carolina / Tennessee Whether you're a first-time or experienced rafter, the Smokies offer great whitewater options for all skill levels. The region is rightfully famous for its stunning natural landscapes and diverse river systems, making it an ideal destination for rafting. Go Horseback Riding in Cades Cove Horseback Riding in Great Smoky Mountains National Park Guided horseback rides through Cades Cove , Smokemont, and Sugarlands are offered at Great Smoky Mountains National Park through the NPS from mid-March through late November . A variety of rides are available including hayrides, carriage rides, and wagon rides. One of the highlights of our family getaways to Tennessee was a trail ride through the National Park. Each experience offers a unique way to explore the stunning landscape, and I’ve learned that arriving early in the morning is the best strategy to secure a spot for the first ride of the day. The trained guides are incredibly knowledgeable, helping to pair each rider with the perfect horse, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and excited for the journey ahead. Our family experienced "God's Fireworks" in the Smokies summer of 2024. Their synchronous flashes created a beautiful light show illuminating the darkness of the forest. Driving the one-way 11-mile Cades Cove loop is one of our favorite things to do in the Smokies. Every time we drive the loop, we've been fortunate to see black bears, deer, wild turkeys, and more. It is important to remember that when observing wildlife in Cades Cove visitors should prioritize safety and respect for the animals and their habitat. Keep a safe distance from all wildlife; binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens can help you get a closer look without disturbing them. Never feed animals, as this can alter their natural behavior and lead to dangerous situations. Stay in your vehicle when viewing larger animals like black bears, and always follow park regulations to ensure both your safety and the well-being of the wildlife. In Cades Cove, visitors often see a variety of animals, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys, and even the occasional fox. The best times for wildlife viewing are early in the morning or late in the afternoon when animals are most active. A drive may take a half-to-full day depending on traffic and the amount of time you take for photographs, hiking , and stops. The historic village in the cove showcases historic buildings including churches, a mill, and more. The visitors center offers information and souvenirs. Extra tip: Experience Cades Cove with this self-guided audio tour that provides insights similar to having a park ranger with you in the car. Drive Roaring Fork Motor Trail in GSMNP Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is another beautiful drive through the park. This scenic drive offers beautiful scenic pull-offs, a drive to *Kuwohi / Clingman's Dome (the famous steep overlook in the North Carolina portion of the park), and numerous waterfalls. For waterfall enthusiasts, this is one of the best routes in the park. We love Chimneys Picnic Area with tables, grills, and a nearby creek. Many of our favorite Smoky Mountain Hiking Trails are in this area as well. Cross the Longest Pedestrian Cable Bridge in North America The Gatlinburg SkyBridge holds a record as the longest pedestrian cable suspension bridge in North America. Guests ride the 1,800-ft SkyLift (a ski-lift style ride) to the SkyDeck where you can then walk almost 700 feet across the SkyBridge . The bridge offers panoramic views of the Smokies and its famous 30-foot glass bottom at the halfway point. The bridge, 500 feet above Gatlinburg, Tennessee, offers beautiful views of the mountains year-round. In addition to the bridge, guests have the chance to climb the Tulip Tower and enjoy views from the Sky Deck. Drive Morton Mountain Tunnel through the Smoky Mountains Morton Mountain Tunnel The Morton Mountain Tunnel is located on Hwy 441 on the way to *Kuwohi / Clingman's Dome from Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Kids love driving through the mountains and this is one of the longer mountain tunnels in the Smokies. See the Bears, but Don't Feed Them! Black Bear in Gatlinburg, Tennessee Seeing black bears is one of the highlights of a trip to the Smoky Mountains. Our family has had the incredible experience of spotting these majestic animals right from the comfort of our cozy Airbnb deck. On our last Smoky Mountain vacation, a large black bear would roam the property each morning. The bears are even known to explore Gatlinburg. We've also enjoyed watching them in Cades Cove, and throughout the National Park, where the bears roam freely. Seeing them in their natural habitat is truly amazing. They explained how the fish move, how to anticipate their movements, and how the water reflects, so we could aim accordingly. Bowfishing combines the excitement of fishing with the precision of archery, providing a hands-on and engaging activity for participants of all ages. Our family, including three generations from grandpa to parents and teens, enjoyed the thrill, laughter, and a bit of friendly competition. Our large group needed two boats. One boat caught the first fish, while the other caught the largest. Tips:  Bring sunscreen, snacks, and a cooler to store your catch. Guides James and Tiffany share their love for horses with visitors of all ages, introducing us to Clydesdales Caravelle, Jericho, Thunder, and Reba, along with the Percheron horses that pulled our wagon ride. We were amazed at the Clydesdales' immense size as we held their hooves, brushed them, and even led them, while the girls assisted in hooking up the wagon and enjoyed a serene ride through the woods. The ranch provides trail and wagon rides at reasonable prices, ensuring guests have a genuine horse experience with well-trained horses that respond to direct rein and verbal commands. Beyond riding, Good Shepherd Ranch offers seasonal events like Halloween and Christmas festivities, firepits, and yard games, with plans to expand to activities such as kayaking, fishing, and Chuckwagon dinners. Spanning generations from 12 to 71, our family agreed this was a highlight of our Branson getaway, thanks to the warm hospitality of this small, family-run business. Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg, Tennessee, are favorite towns for tourists visiting the Great Smoky Mountains. These are our favorite things to do on a Smoky Mountain Vacation: Dollywood Theme Park in Tennessee Best Attractions in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee Titanic Museum: Pigeon Forge, Tennessee Titanic Museum at Pigeon Forge The Titanic Museum is a favorite attraction for our family. The museum is home to the world's largest collection of Titanic memorabilia. Through interactive exhibits, visitors experience the story of the Titanic. You have the opportunity to walk through replica living quarters, the grand staircase, and interactive exhibits. Each guest is assigned a passenger aboard the ship as their "character" throughout the museum, and they learn about their assigned passenger and the ill-fated ship. Dollywood at Christmas Dollywood Tennessee's premier theme park is a family favorite. Dolly Parton grew up in the Smokies and her love for the community and signature brand of entertainment can be found throughout the area, including Dollywood  and Dolly's Stampede. Artisans demonstrate crafts on site from blacksmiths to glassblowers. World-class roller coasters, a steam train ride, and amusement park rides are included in admission. Paula Deen's Lumberjack Feud Paula Deen's Lumberjack Feud and Supper Show On one of our trips to the Smoky Mountains, we experienced both Paula Deen's Lumberjack Adventure Park and the Supper Show. At the Adventure Park, we all enjoyed the elaborate ropes course, lumberjack course (complete with the barrel roll), and zipline roller coaster. The park truly offered an exhilarating experience we all loved. The show was also terrific. We watched as lumberjacks showcased their talents through competitions in log rolling, climbing, sawing, and entertaining antics. The show's year-round availability, including a special holiday edition during Christmas, made it a highlight of our trip. In the end, experiencing both the Adventure Park and the show added a perfect blend of excitement and entertainment to our family vacation in the Smoky Mountains. Dolly Parton's Stampede Dolly Parton's Stampede My daughters love Dolly Parton's Stampede, This fantastic live dinner theater show is a good time for the whole family. Spectators gather in the arena, ready for rodeo-style entertainment. Everyone is served a tasty meal, including juicy chicken, hearty soup, corn on the cob, and a sweet treat for dessert. The show is packed with over thirty magnificent horses, a variety of animals, and music. It's a festive experience for all ages. The Escape Game: Pigeon Forge, TN The Escape Game One of the highlights of our family vacations is engaging in Escape Games. The Escape Game offers top-notch escape rooms across the country. Work together as a team to solve puzzles and escape from a themed room within a 60-minute challenge. We've tried cabin, submarine, and prison themes with The Escape Gam,e and all were a blast. This interactive adventure is popular among tweens, teens, and adults alike. Rocky Top Mountain Coaster Rocky Top Mountain Coaster Mountain Coasters are one of my girls' favorite things to do in the mountains, and it all started with their first-ever mountain coaster ride on Rocky Top Mountain Coaster  in the Smokies! Riders control their speed on a silent track as they ride down the mountain. This smooth, scenic ride is one of our favorite mountain thrills. You may ride during the day or at night when the track is colorfully lit. Smoky Mountain Jeep Tour Smoky Mountains/Roaring Fork Sightseeing Tour By Jeep Roaring Fork Motor Trail is one of the most scenic roads through Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and this half-day sightseeing tour is a memorable way to experience the waterfalls, wildlife, and nature of the Smokies. Light Family Whitewater Rafting in the Smoky Mountains Whitewater Rafting My girls still talk about our family's whitewater adventure in the Smoky Mountains. This is a bucket list experience for the entire family. Whether you're a first-time or experienced rafter, the Smokies offer great whitewater  options for everyone. Our family thoroughly enjoyed our time at this beautiful State Park, where we hiked, explored, and stayed in one of the rustic cabins. Located in the Daniel Boone National Forest, the park is centered around its namesake—a stunning sandstone arch leading to beautiful views of Red River Gorge. This natural wonder draws thousands of visitors a year. Kentucky's Natural Bridge Natural Bridge: The Crown Jewel Kentucky's Natural Bridge is 65 feet high at the highest point, 78 feet in length, and 20 feet wide, providing a path and scenic viewpoint for hikers. The sandstone arch was shaped over centuries of erosion. Geologically, the bridge is Pottsville conglomerate, a durable rock that survived as the softer rock washed away. Our Three-Generation Adventure Whitewater Rafting in the Smoky Mountains and Cherokee National Forest Whitewater Rafting: Pigeon River in the Great Smoky Mountains Our family LOVES adventure. We often choose vacations centered around exploring nature and the great outdoors and spending time together. The Great Smoky Mountains is one of our favorite repeat destinations and one of our all-time favorite adventures in the Smokies was a three-generation whitewater rafting trip . We enjoy many float trips annually in our home state of Missouri, and our favorite spot is the Current River . We love the Current River . Because it is a Class I-II river, it is ideal for multiple generations, a leisurely trip, and taking nature photos. Canoeing on the Current River is all about enjoying nature and having a relaxed time together. We also enjoy other rivers in Missouri, but all from a canoe, kayak, or tube. So, while we are seasoned canoers, it is a completely different experience than whitewater rafting . During a multi-generational trip to Tennessee, I proposed the idea of whitewater rafting to create a bucket list adventure that the entire family could enjoy in the Smoky Mountains and all 8 (ages 12-72) voted unanimously yes. In planning the trip, my main goal was to find trusted and experienced guides to ensure everyone's safety, allowing us to focus on having fun together. After researching reviews, schedules, and pricing, we chose a Whitewater Rafting trip  with Big Bear Rafting .    Spoiler alert: Our family rafting trip on the Pigeon River ended up being one of the best parts of our Smoky Mountains vacation. They knew the river intimately and could anticipate what we should do. They gave clear instructions and training before we began. And, they weren't just skilled at navigating rapids; they were excellent with kids, telling jokes, sharing facts about the river and the region, and offering choices for more adventures on the river. At one point, our guide asked if we got sick on the "Spinning Tea Cups" at Disney World - the reason? They guided us through one section spinning our boat in circles. Then, another guide gave my 14-year-old daughter the chance to "ride the bull" (I wish we had pictures!) - she sat on the helm of the raft like a bull and rode through the rapids (and she didn't fall off - super balance!). So, even on the tamer Lower Section, we had a fabulous adventure. We also appreciated an opportunity to stop and swim, a mix of paddling and taking breaks so we didn't get worn out, and a nice balance of rapids and more peaceful sections on the Lower Section. Why Choose the Pigeon River? And, should you choose the Upper or Lower Section? The Pigeon River, just outside Gatlinburg, Tennessee, offers two distinct sections that make it perfect for adventurers. Both sections are well-suited for first-timers since professional guides do most of the work. A standard rafting trip on the Pigeon River lasts about 3-4 hours total, including check-in, safety briefing, and getting geared up. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled trip time for check-in and preparation. Note that the rules and requirements are set for safety reasons and are strictly enforced by all licensed outfitters on the river : See descriptions and requirements below: The Upper Section:   Class III-IV rapids (perfect for teenagers and adventurous adults, offering exciting drops and waves while still being manageable for beginners when guided. For the Upper Pigeon River (more challenging section), participants must be at least 8 years old and weigh 70 pounds. Plan approximately 1.5-2 hours for the Upper Section. The Lower Section:   Class I-II rapids (ideal for younger kids and seniors), making it perfect for families with young children or those wanting a gentler introduction to rafting. The Lower Pigeon River accepts children as young as 3 years old. Plan approximately 2 hours for the Lower Section. We checked in and listened to a thorough trip and safety talk before meeting our guide. Our guide assisted us with our gear and addressed any questions or concerns we had. After that, it was just a quick 5-minute bus ride to the river. Booking and Preparation for Whitewater Rafting Trip: You MUST make a reservation. Whitewater Rafting  is one of the most popular adventures in the Appalachians. During peak season, these trips fill up, so you are may not get a spot without resrevations. Ask your booking company for the best time to book (morning or afternoon) for the season. We chose the afternoon (had a good night's sleep the night before) and returned to our cabin for a grilled supper and relaxation. This was ideal. Arrive 30 minutes early for check-in and listen carefully to instructions. What to Bring Whitewater Rafting: Bring a change of clothes and towels. Pack water shoes or old sneakers (no flip-flops allowed - it's the law). For your safety, you must have shoes that will stay secure. Wear quick-dry clothing (avoid cotton). Wear quick-drying synthetic materials like polyester or nylon (avoid cotton). In warm weather, wear a swimsuit with shorts and a T-shirt over it. In cooler weather, add thermal layers. Bring waterproof sunscreen. Pack snacks for after the trip. The outfitter will provide helmets and life jackets. For Your Safety: Listen to the detailed safety briefings and learn as you practice before launch. They will teach you how to sit in the raft, what to do to avoid going overboard, and how to respond if you do go overboard (no one in our group fell out of the boat, but it does happen, so be prepared). Your tour company will provide safety equipment, including child-sized - large-adult life jackets and helmets. Trust and follow the instructions of the professional guides who are trained to make safety fun instead of scary. Swimming: You don't have to be a swimmer to participate in rafting as you'll always wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Your guide will also give detailed safety instructions before the trip on how to respond if you do go overboard. However, you should feel at ease on the water and communicate any concerns to your guide. The life jackets are made to keep you afloat even if you end up in the water. Cost and Value: Expect to pay about $40-80 per person, depending on the section you choose. If you’re visiting for the first time, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your trip. Why Visit the St. Louis Arch? The Gateway Arch National Park  is a must-visit for history buffs, architecture lovers, and families alike. The park was officially designated as a National Park in 2018, including the Arch itself, the Museum at the Gateway Arch, and the Old Courthouse, where pivotal court cases like the Dred Scott decision were argued. The park grounds offer green spaces, walking paths, and riverfront views. History of the St. Louis Gateway Arch Designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965, the Gateway Arch was built as a symbol of Westward Expansion in the United States. The sleek stainless steel structure is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a testament to American ingenuity and vision. Going to the Top of the Arch A tram ride to the top of the Arch provides stunning views of St. Louis and the Mississippi River. The tram seats remind me of Mork's egg from Mork & Mindy . The small elevator seats five visitors. Each tram is compact but comfortable. Tickets : Purchase in advance online to secure a spot. Ride Duration : Approximately 4 minutes up  and 3 minutes down . Best Time to Go : Early morning or late afternoon to avoid long lines. Height Warning : The observation deck is small and may feel cramped. Once at the top, you’ll be treated to 30-mile panoramic views on a clear day. Through the windows at the top, visitors can see downtown St. Louis, the Mississippi River, and parts of Illinois. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the scenery. Gateway Arch Carriage Rides St. Louis Carriage Company offers horse-drawn carriage rides near the Mississippi riverfront. Rides typically last 15–30 minutes and provide great views of the river and downtown St. Louis. Cinderella carriages and classic carriages are available. Riverboats at the Gateway Arch The Mississippi River is an important part of St. Louis' history. A ride aboard the Gateway Arch Riverboats, named the Tom Sawyer and the Becky Thatcher, is an iconic experience. Both boats are docked along the Mississippi River, directly beneath the Gateway Arch. Canoeing the Current River in Missouri Autumn in Missouri means it's time for our family's annual float trip on the Current River in Eminence, and a weekend of glamping at Echo Bluff State Park to visit the wild horses , hike, bike, and explore. Over the years, we've canoed many rivers in Missouri, but the Current is our favorite. Missouri's Current River is great for kids and families. The Current River in Missouri Our four girls grew up camping and canoeing with our family. Autumn on the Current River is not only scenic, but it is peaceful and easy for beginning paddlers. We loved introducing our girls to family canoe trips on this clean, calm, easy float trip. After more than a decade of float trips, we've only had one canoe tip (and I still think it had to do with the balance of a grown man, a loaded cooler, and a petite girl). With proper lifejackets, experience, and care no one was injured and it is now part of our family lore. Over the years, we have canoed with multiple outfitters, but Carr's Canoe Rental is our favorite. We appreciate their friendly, safe transportation to and from our spot. Choose a route based on what you want to see. You can explore a cave on a canoe trip. If you float Round Spring to Pulltite you can explore Merritt Rock Cave. We bring tennis shoes and flashlights. Bats and snakes do live in the caves. Don't touch or bother them as you're visiting their habitat. We always find wildlife. Crawdad in The Current River, Missouri Over the years, our family has observed otters, fish, snakes, bald eagles, deer, raccoons, turtles, tadpoles, frogs, woodpeckers, bats, crawdads, and more. The kids love finding crawdads when we stop at a bank for lunch. You can visit Welch Hospital Ruins. The  Welch Hospital Ruins  and the nearby cave and springs are a favorite pitstop on the Current River. In 1913, an Illinois doctor purchased Welch Springs believing the water had healing properties for asthma, tuberculosis, and other ailments. While the area is scenic and beautiful, the rugged inaccessible roads made it difficult to get to the hospital for treatments, and the facility failed to find success. When the doctor died in 1940, his family closed the operation. The building came to ruin and now the ruins are accessible from the river. One of our favorite hikes at Round Spring. One of our favorite hikes is at Round Spring. We follow a short trail back to an old cabin and the spring where we've observed otters, eagles, and turtles. There are many springs along the river. Fire Hydrant Spring: Current River, Missouri Round Spring, Pultite Spring, Blue Spring, and Fire Hydrant Spring offer beautiful stops along the river. Because the river is spring-fed, the water remains a fairly consistent 60°F year-round. The autumn scenery never disappoints. Over the years, we've floated this river in the spring, summer, and fall. Autumn is our favorite, but each trip has been memorable and fun. We love that weekdays and fall seem to be more family-friendly and pleasant. We love enjoying the wildlife, the fall foliage, the scenery, and the memories. We love that this river is hospitable to all ages as it is easy, adventurous, and fun. Autumn is our family favorite on the Current River , in Eminence, Missouri, as is not only scenic, but it is peaceful and easy for beginning paddlers. However, Spring and Summer are wonderful too. We loved introducing our girls to family canoe trips on this clean, calm, easy float trip. After nearly two decades of float trips as a family, we've only had one canoe tip (and I still think it had to do with the balance of a grown man, a loaded cooler, and a petite girl). With proper lifejackets, experience, and care no one was injured and it is now part of our family lore. Alley Spring & Mill in Eminence, Missouri Planning Your Trip Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned paddler, preparation is key. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your experience: Choose Your Route: Decide on a stretch of the river that suits your skill level and desired length of trip. Ask your outfitters, Carr's Canoe Rental  team is very knowledgeable, for tips, maps, and advice so you see each stop. They'll even help estimate distance and time so you'll be able to anticipate your stops. Check the Weather: Always stay informed about the weather conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing. Local outfitters do a great job keeping track of the weather and they will not put in canoes if inclement or dangerous weather is on the radar. Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and safety gear to keep everyone comfortable and safe. Make time for Additional Nearby Sites: Alley Mill , Rocky Falls ,  and Peck Ranch  an elk preserve. The Current River in the Fall Best Time to Canoe the Current River The best time to canoe the Current River depends on your preferences. The river is most crowded on weekends in the summer. It is least crowded in the Fall and Winter.: Spring (March-May):  Higher water levels and fewer crowds, but cooler temperatures. We have enjoyed spring float trips as a family. The wildflowers are just beginning to appear, the river is less crowded, but the water will often be higher. Summer (June-August):  Warm weather and perfect for swimming, but weekends can be crowded. Fall (September-November):  Beautiful autumn colors, mild weather, and fewer paddlers. This is our FAVORITE time to canoe the Current. We float it every autumn as a family. Winter (December-February):  Solitude and stunning icy scenery, but cold water and weather require extra precautions. Popular Canoeing Routes on the Current River The Current River has several access points, making it easy to customize your trip. Over the years, we have canoed with multiple outfitters, but Carr's Canoe Rental  is our favorite. We appreciate their friendly, safe transportation to and from our spot. Choose a route based on what you want to see. Here are some popular routes: 1. Cedar Grove to Akers Ferry (10 miles, 4-6 hours) This 10-mile stretch promises beautiful scenery, gentle currents, and mild rapids for a Class I-II canoe route. Our family has enjoyed floating down this route many times, and one of our favorite stops is the exploration of the Welch Hospital ruins. This hidden gem features old stone ruins of a hospital that was a retreat for those seeking help from the natural springs. Clear water on the Current River: Cedar Grove to Akers Ferry Route Key Sites Along This Route: Welch Hospital Ruins  – Just downstream from Cedar Grove, explore the remains of Dr. C.H. Welch’s Hospital , a historic site once used as a retreat for people seeking the health benefits of the river’s natural spring waters. Welch Spring  – One of the most beautiful and powerful springs on the river, Welch Spring pours out from a cave and feeds directly into the Current River, making the water even cooler and clearer. The ruins of Welch Hospital sit above the spring. Scenic Bluffs and Caves  – Towering limestone bluffs rise above the river, creating stunning reflections in the water. Keep an eye out for small caves and springs hidden along the banks. What to Expect: A mix of slow-moving water and gentle rapids. Opportunities to explore Welch Spring  on foot. Gravel bars are perfect for a quick break or picnic. 2. Akers Ferry to Pulltite (10 miles, 4-6 hours) This beginner-friendly section of the river is a great adventure. This 10-mile float is known for its springs, caves, and clear water , making it an ideal choice for those new to paddling. My girls love canoeing into the cave along this route; it’s a scenic and fun adventure. The turquoise blue water is my favorite. Morning on the Current River: Akers Ferry to Pulltite Route Key Sites Along This Route: Akers Ferry  – One of the last operating ferries in Missouri , it has been in service since the 1800s. For my city kids, taking our car across a river on a ferry was fun. Cave Spring  – One of the most impressive sights along the river, this massive cave has a spring flowing directly out of its entrance, spilling cold, clear water  into the Current River. Paddlers can canoe inside the cave  to experience its cool interior. Rock Formations & Wildlife  – This stretch is home to towering bluffs , wildlife such as otters and bald eagles , and plenty of great swimming holes . What to Expect: A calm, scenic float with minimal rapids . A must-see stop at Cave Spring . Multiple gravel bars for resting or camping. 3. Pulltite to Round Spring (9 miles, 4-5 hours) Considered one of the most scenic sections  of the Current River, this 9-mile paddle offers lush scenery, hidden caves, and towering bluffs . Our family chooses this route most frequently. We love to stop and hike back to Pultite Spring, explore the cabin, then take photos of Fire Hydrant Cave (a small cave that spews water like a gushing fire hydrant), and park our canoes on the side of the bluffs, hiking up into Round Spring Cave (you cannot float into any caves on this route). So, why is it called Pultite? You will need to "Pultite" and be sure to stop or you'll keep floating and will miss this stop. Fire Hydrant Cave on the Current River Key Sites Along This Route: Pulltite Spring & Cabin  – About a mile downstream from Pulltite Campground, Pulltite Spring  emerges from the rocky bluffs and flows into the river. Nearby, a historic cabin  from the early 1900s sits along the bank, adding an extra layer of charm. Fire Hydrant Cave / Waterfall  – A small, hidden waterfall  along the bank of the river, this spot is perfect for a quick photo or a refreshing splash. Round Spring Cave  – Located near Round Spring Campground , this cave is one of the largest and most fascinating  in the area. While access to the cave is limited to guided tours, paddlers can see its massive entrance  from the river. Towering Bluffs  – This section is well known for its majestic limestone bluffs , some of which rise hundreds of feet above the river . What to Expect: A few gentle riffles and deep, calm pools . Stunning scenery and wildlife , including deer and herons. Access to Round Spring Campground , a great overnight stop. 4. Round Spring to Two Rivers (18 miles, full-day or overnight trip) Canoeing the Current River A longer stretch, this 18-mile paddle offers fewer crowds, stunning geology, and excellent fishing . Many paddlers opt to break this into a two-day trip  and camp along the way. Key Sites Along This Route: Eminence Bluffs  – These massive limestone cliffs  tower over the river, creating some of the most breathtaking views in the Ozarks. Blue Spring  – One of the deepest springs in Missouri , Blue Spring is over 300 feet deep  and glows with an intense blue color. A short hike from the river  leads to this spectacular sight. Two Rivers Confluence  – Where the Current River meets the Jack’s Fork River , this area is rich in wildlife and a great spot for fishing or setting up camp. What to Expect: More remote, peaceful  paddling. Plenty of gravel bars  for camping. Deep fishing holes  and great chances to see bald eagles . 5. Two Rivers to Van Buren (22 miles, overnight or two-day trip) The Current River This final stretch  of the Current River is known for deep pools, clear water, and peaceful solitude . It’s a fantastic option for overnight paddling trips  and those who love wildlife spotting . Key Sites Along This Route: Big Spring  – One of the largest springs in the U.S. , Big Spring pumps out over 286 million gallons of water per day ! While not directly on the river, a short detour near Van Buren  leads to this natural wonder. Quiet Pools & Gravel Bars  – This section features some of the deepest pools  on the Current River, making it ideal for swimming and fishing . Wildlife Sightings  – Due to the lower traffic on this stretch, deer, wild turkeys, and river otters  are frequently spotted. What to Expect: A longer, more remote  stretch of river. Fewer paddlers and excellent camping spots . The perfect grand finale  at Big Spring  near Van Buren. Wild Horses of Shannon County What You’ll See on the Current River Crystal-clear waters  flow over a gravel bed. Massive bluffs  rising above the river. Caves and springs , including Big Spring , one of the largest in the U.S. Wildlife  such as the famous wild horse of Shannon County , otters, turtles, bald eagles, and deer. Historic sites , including remnants of old mills and ferry crossings. Crawdad in The Current River, Missouri Tips for Canoeing the Current River ✔️ Check water levels  before your trip—high water can be dangerous, while low water can mean more portaging. ✔️ Bring plenty of water & snacks —there are few places to stop and resupply. ✔️ Pack a dry bag  for valuables like phones, cameras, and extra clothes. ✔️ Wear water shoes  for traction on rocky riverbanks. ✔️ Respect nature —leave no trace and pack out all trash .✔️ Secure your canoe rental or bring your own  early, especially in peak summer months.
