  • Step into a Frozen Fairytale: Explore North America's Ice Castles

Ice Castle in Minnesota Must-visit Ice Castle destinations One of our family's favorite winter memories is the remarkable trip to Minnesota, where we had the incredible opportunity to see the captivating Ice Castle, a breathtaking display that transforms the landscape into a magical winter wonderland. Ice Castles are a winter wonder found in five different locations. Each castle showcases stunning archways made of ice crystals, an ice throne, tunnels, and frozen slides! The Ice Castle was more than a mere ice display; it was an intricate masterpiece featuring a frozen maze that invited exploration at every twist and turn. The ice walls shimmered in shades of blue and white, creating a stunning visual effect that left us in awe. The castle featured archways, tunnels, slides, and ice chandeliers delicately suspended above us, forming frozen waterfalls cascading down the walls. North America's enchanting ice castles are perfect for unforgettable winter family adventures. During the day, the ice castles provide a frozen white backdrop for fun photos and exploration. As the sun sets, the castles glow with beautiful LED lighting, offering a dazzling nighttime color show. As the sun began to set, the Ice Castle transformed once more, illuminated by colorful lights that danced across the ice, creating a magical spectacle. The caverns and tunnels create a mesmerizing winter wonderland to explore. Kids love crawling through tunnels to discover "ice rooms" with dazzling ice crystal "chandeliers" hanging from above. My girls especially loved the ice slide. Guests are provided with a mat, and they slide through the frozen tunnel. Ice Castles Our Tips for a Visit to the Ice Castles: It will be COLD! • Your Complete Guide to Tulip Time in Pella, Iowa

Vermeer Mill in Pella Iowa proudly displays Tulip Time Banners   Every May, my daughters and I visit Pella's Tulip Time festival, hosted annually during the first full weekend in May (Thurs-Sat). After years of navigating this popular celebration, I've gathered countless tips to help first-time visitors make the most of their experience in Iowa's Dutch treasure. With 300,000 tulips planted in numerous gardens around the town, two wonderful parades every day for three days, delicious Dutch food, and Dutch traditions, this festival is a spring must-see.   We always get there on Thursday morning when the crowds are lighter and enjoy the festival through Friday. Then, on Saturday, we travel to Amana Colonies for their Maifest , which is about an hour away.    My Top Tips for an Unforgettable Tulip Time Experience   1. Plan Your Parade Strategy Trust me on this one – the parades are unmissable! There are two daily parades: one in the afternoon at 2:45 and one at night at 8:30. On Friday, fireworks are displayed after the evening parade. My girls and I always stake out our afternoon parade spot near the Vermeer Mill or on the square first thing in the morning. Guests are allowed to lay blankets and chairs in their spots early in the day. I use a folding wagon to carry our chairs, cooler, and blanket. The night parade is just wonderful and enchanting, with each of the fabulous floats lit beautifully. One of the traditions of the parade is, to begin with street cleaners, so consider where you sit and avoid sitting next to the troughs of water where they refill their buckets. The photos above only offer a glimpse of the wonderful parade. You'll enjoy dozens of animated floats, marching bands, and performers. Jaarsma Bakery's Tulip Time Display in Pella, Iowa 2. Time Your Treats Right After standing in long lines at Jaarsma Bakery , I've discovered a secret: visit during parade times! While everyone else is watching the parade, you can enjoy "shorter" lines. As we visit the festival for multiple days, we watch the parade one day and shop during parade time another day. Typically Thursday is less crowded than the weekends. Additionally, Jaarsma offers an "express" line in the alley behind their shop for Dutch Letter orders. You won't be able to purchase their entire variety of goodies at this station, but it's a nice way to get their most famous treat without a long wait.   Some of our Favorite Dutch Treats to enjoy in Pella: Pastries from Jaarsma and Vander Ploeg Bakeries: Dutch Letters - Flaky, S-shaped pastries filled with almond paste, traditionally eaten during St. Nicholas Day celebrations but now enjoyed year-round in Pella. Dutch Puff Pillows - Light, airy pastries similar to cream puffs but with a distinctive Dutch flavor profile, often filled with sweetened whipped cream or custard. Almond Blanket - A rectangular pastry with flaky layers wrapped around a sweet almond filling, similar to Dutch letters but in a different shape. St. Nick Cookies - Spiced shortbread cookies shaped and decorated to resemble St. Nicholas, traditionally baked for the December 5th celebration of Sinterklaas. Dutch Apple Bread - A dense, moist bread studded with chunks of apple and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, sometimes topped with a sweet glaze or streusel. Favorite Foods from Ulrich's Meat Market and Int Velds Meat Market and Delicatessen: Dutch Bologna  - A distinctive ring-shaped bologna with a smoky flavor and firm texture, often sliced thin and served on sandwiches or with cheese and crackers. Dutch Gouda  - A semi-hard cheese with a rich, buttery flavor that becomes more complex with age. In Pella, it's often served at room temperature with mustard or bread. Favorite Fair Foods during Pella's Tulip Time: Poffertjes - Small, fluffy pancakes made from yeast batter, typically served warm with powdered sugar and butter. These coin-sized treats have a light, spongy texture. Krokketen - Crispy deep-fried rolls with a creamy meat-based filling inside, usually made with beef or veal ragout. The contrast between the crunchy exterior and soft interior makes them a popular snack. Dutch Spiced Beef Sandwiches - Thin-sliced, slow-cooked beef seasoned with a blend of traditional Dutch spices (often including cloves, nutmeg, and juniper berries), served on soft rolls.  3. Navigate the Historic Village Like a Pro The historic village is the heart of the festival, but it can get crowded quickly. We always start our day here, arriving when it opens. This is one of our favorite experiences during Tulip Time, and we typically spend an entire day in the village (typically, we choose Thursday for the parade and shopping and Friday for the village). We love watching the wooden shoe maker, Hindeloopen painting, blacksmith, the corn grist mill, Goliath, the street organ, touring Wyatt Earp's home, and the other buildings. The Vermeer Mill tours are fascinating. We love exploring the miniature village, going up on the mill deck, and trying to lift those heavy flour bags. You can easily spend 3-5 hours in the village. If you wish to come and go, you may as they give wristbands to mark your admission. Pro Tip: During Tulip Time you need to schedule your Vermeer Mill (the iconic windmill) tour when you arrive. When possible, we enjoy timing it so that we are on the Windmill Deck during the parade. Molengracht Canal in Pella, Iowa 4. Dress for Success Iowa weather in May can be unpredictable. We dress in layers and comfortable walking shoes. Sometimes we opt to drop off hoodies at our parade spot during the day. Don't forget sunscreen and perhaps a small umbrella – we've experienced everything from summerlike heat to spring showers during our visits. Tulips in Pella, Iowa 5. Make Time for Photos The tulip gardens around Central Park and the historical village offer stunning photo opportunities. My favorite spot is near the canal with the Vermeer Mill in the background during "golden hour" just before sunset. The light is perfect, and the crowds have usually thinned by then.   Klokkenspel in Pella, Iowa 6. Hidden Gems Most Tourists Miss While most visitors focus on the main square, we love exploring the residential areas where local homeowners create stunning tulip displays. The neighborhoods just north of the square are particularly beautiful and less crowded. Watch the Klokkenspel . This Pella landmark features eight 4-foot-tall mechanical figures showing scenes from Pella's history as music plays. The Klokkenspel can be viewed first from Franklin Street and then from the courtyard behind. Performances are held daily at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 9:00 pm. The courtyard behind the Klokkenspel features beautiful Dutch murals and leads to the Molengracht Canal in Pella, Iowa . Scholte House : The Scholte House Museum is a charming home built back in 1848 by Pella's founder, Hendrik Scholte, for his wife, Maria. The house is filled with their personal belongings, giving you a real sense of their life and times. The gardens behind the house are absolutely beautiful and free to explore. If you're up for a treat, you can even enjoy a Dutch coffee time at Maria's Tea Room (reservations required). Sunken Garden Park  located at the 1100 Block of Main Street, gets its name from its central feature, a sunken pond shaped like a wooden shoe. The park also features a diverse array of formal tulip beds, trees, a windmill, benches from the turn of the century, and light poles. It attracts tourists throughout the year, particularly in the spring when over 15,000 tulips are in bloom. During winter, many people enjoy ice skating. Shows at the Band Stand and Opera House : During Tuliip Time you can enjoy special live performances ranging from dance to plays. Check the Tulip Time Schedule each year for information . Dutch Craft Market: 1002 Franklin Street in West Market Park, you can explore over 100 booths offering diverse shopping choices. Vermeer Corporation offers free self-guided tours (2110 E Vermeer Rd.). Explore the museum to discover the origins of innovation, the impact of our equipment on the world, and the teams responsible for this significant work. Watch the Annual Tulip Time Schedule for additional information on shuttles, quilt shows, tractor pulls, special tours, meals, and workshops. The Nitty-Gritty: Planning Your Visit to Tulip Time in Pella Tulip Time in Pella, Iowa Where to Park I've found the best parking at Calvary Christian Reformed Church (408 Maple St.). They offer free parking, clean restrooms, and a shuttle to and from the festival from 9 am-10 pm. This is easier than finding street or paid parking. This is a very popular spot, so try to arrive before 9 AM before the lot fills. Other parking options Open Bible Church: Located at 837 Washington St., parking is $15 per day Connect Church: Located at 914 Liberty St., parking is $5 First Church: Located at 605 Broadway St., parking is $15 per day Pella Christian High School: Located at 300 Eagle Lane, parking is available on Saturdays only Delta Lot: Located on the west side of town, parking is available on Fridays and Saturdays Tulip Time festival  Street Parking (follow signage) Tulip Time in Pella, Iowa  Best Times for Activities Morning: Historic Village tours and shopping Midday: Catch the afternoon parade Late afternoon: Visit the bakeries Evening: Night parade and dinner at one of Pella's charming restaurants   Tulip Turin in Pella, Iowa Additional Tips from a Tulip Time Fan Bring cash – some vendors don't accept cards Come on Thursday - If possible, visit on Thursday for the smallest crowds. Book accommodations months in advance if you're staying overnight. Read our guide to the best Vacation Rentals in Pella for ideas. We often stay in neighboring towns like Grinnell (between Pella and Amana Colonies) as it can be more affordable during the festival season .   Tulip Time isn't just a festival; it's a celebration of Dutch heritage that my family looks forward to every year. Each visit brings discoveries and adds to our collection of precious memories. Whether you're planning your first visit or returning for another year of Dutch celebrations, I hope these tips help you create special memories in Pella. Pella, Iowa, famous for their windows and Dutch heritage, is a charming town that welcomes visitors with its historic Dutch village, America's tallest working Dutch windmill, delightful made-from-scratch bakeries, and quaint shops. Vermeer Mill, Pella, Iowa Vermeer Mill: Pella's Windmill Vermeer Mill  is an 1850s-style Dutch grain mill that has been at home in Pella's historic village since 2002. Visitors are invited to tour the five-story mill and learn how grain is ground into flour. You may even purchase a souvenir bag of flour in the gift shop. • Celebrating Dutch Christmas Traditions in Pella, Iowa

We LOVE Pella at Christmastime! Friends know how much I love Pella, Iowa. This charming town has been a favorite getaway for our family for years. We enjoy the strong Dutch heritage, the Vermeer windmill, and the delightful bakeries tempting us with homemade treats. And let's not forget the wonderful Dutch Christmas celebrations. One of the most special events in Pella is the Kerstmarkt, a Dutch Christmas Market held on the first weekend of December. It's a time when guests can immerse themselves in the European-inspired Christmas market and join the city's cherished Christmas Tour of Homes. This is a charming small-town "Hallmark Christmas" experience we love. Christmas in Pella, Iowa This is our Guide to Celebrate Christmas in Pella, Iowa featuring Kerstmarkt, a Dutch Christmas Market, Sinterklaas, delicious foods, and fun traditions. Tour Vermeer Mill & the Historic Village: Pella's Windmill Vermeer Mill  is an 1850s-style Dutch grain mill in Pella's historic village since 2002. Visitors are invited to tour the five-story mill and learn how grain is ground into flour. You may even purchase a souvenir bag of flour in the gift shop. Guides teach visitors about the process, you learn about the various types of wood used to build the windmill and why each wood was selected, and children try to lift flour bags. A highlight is standing on the windmill deck where you can see the town below, Pella's canal, and shops. Admission to the windmill also includes admission to the miniature Dutch Village display (note the miniature Sinterklaas) and the historic village which includes Wyatt Earp's home, a blacksmith, a grist mill where corn is ground into cornmeal, a bakery, and a wooden shoemaker's shop. My girls love the Goliath street organ, the pastries served at the Bakkerii and the decorations. Experience Kerstmarkt. The Kerstmarkt, Pella's annual Christmas festival is held the first weekend of December with an outdoor European Christmas market for shopping, wassail, sleigh rides, and the chance to meet Sinterklaas (Santa of the Netherlands). Artisans sell homemade ornaments, decorations, jewelry, candy, honey, and kettle corn. Hot wassail, cocoa, and pastries are holiday favorites. Horse-drawn wagon rides, the Sinterklaas parade, and the outdoor ice skating rink add to the fun. Jaarsma Bakery, Pella,Iowa Enjoy Dutch pastries from Jaarsma Bakery . Jaarsma Bakery  is an Iowa landmark offering Dutch ambiance and goodness! Their Dutch letters, an S-shaped pastry filled with specialty almond filling, are a must-try. The S represents Sinterklaas, but the bakery makes the treats year-round. Their puff pillows are my personal favorites, but the apple ring, goat legs, and cream horns are amazing as well. During festivals, the lines to shop at Jaarsma's wrap around the block. If possible, arrive early or shop during a parade. Ulrich Dutch Specialties, Pella, Iowa Shop for meat and cheese at In't Veld's Meat Market  and Ulrich Meat Market . Buy traditional bologna, gouda cheese, and other delicious items at In't Veld's. Their bologna is made in-house, and they host live music on the rooftop during weekends. Klokkenspel, Pella, Iowa Watch the Klokkenspel . The iconic attraction in Pella showcases eight mechanical figures standing at 4 feet tall, depicting scenes from the town's history while music plays. You can first catch a glimpse of the Klokkenspel from Franklin Street before heading to the courtyard behind. Daily performances take place at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 9:00 pm. The courtyard, adorned with stunning Dutch murals, provides access to the canal. Discover more tips and a calendar of events at Visit Pella . More Hidden Gems in Pella Most Tourists Miss Scholte House : The Scholte House Museum is a charming home built back in 1848 by Pella's founder, Hendrik Scholte, for his wife, Maria. During winter, many people enjoy ice skating. Vermeer Corporation  offers free self-guided tours (2110 E Vermeer Rd.). Explore the museum to discover the origins of innovation, the impact of our equipment on the world, and the teams responsible for this significant work. • Experience Synchronous Fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains: A Guide

The Synchronous Fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains: Elkmont Campground It was autumn, 2008, and I was strolling through the Country Club Plaza Art Fair, a regional art fair featuring hundreds of artists. One particular booth caught my eye. Stunning nature photography printed on glass captured the forest at night, bedazzled with the warm yellow glow of hundreds of Tennessee fireflies. I had never seen anything like it. Sure, I have fireflies in my backyard as any Midwesterner does, but I have never seen hundreds, maybe thousands, all at once. This phenomenon struck my curiosity and I began a conversation with the photographer,  Radim Schreiber . I learned that Radim grew up in the Czech Republic where fireflies are rare. When he came to Iowa to study photography in college, he discovered the nighttime wonder of fireflies and began photographing them. Over time, he developed a technique to photograph fireflies and came to meet scientists and learn more about the luminescent beetles. He has photographed fireflies worldwide, but he claims that the best firefly experience occurs every summer in the Great Smoky Mountains. There are over 2,400 species of fireflies in the world, 19 of which call the Smoky Mountains home. But, only one species in the Smokies is known to perform a synchronous mating ritual when they all flash in unison each summer. The Smoky Mountain’s Summer Lightshow: Synchronous Fireflies Synchronous fireflies glowing in the Great Smoky Mountains during peak firefly season For those "in the know," seeing the Synchronous Fireflies of the Great Smoky Mountains is a lifelong dream and such a draw that the National Park Service conducts an annual lottery to regulate the number of attendees, protecting both the insects and the wonder of the event for spectators. Every year at the fair, I marvel at Radim's Smithsonian award-winning photography and, thanks to his advice, every spring I enter the NPS Lottery to see the fireflies. Scientists study the fireflies and predict their peak performance week, awarding a set number of permits to enter the campground for firefly viewing. People from all over the world enter the drawing (there is a $1/household entry fee) hoping to see this mesmerizing mating ritual. And, every year until 2024, I lost. This year, I won, and on June 5th, our family experienced God’s Fireworks, also known as the Synchronous Fireflies of the Smoky Mountains. Showtime at Elkmont: The Best Spot for Synchronous Firefly Viewing The Troll Bridge at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park: The Best Spot for Firefly Viewing We arrived at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with our firefly permit, choosing a spot near Troll Bridge. We learned that the NPS has adjusted the rules for attending the event over the years. In our case, they permitted one family-size vehicle with up to seven passengers. Campers at Elkmont are also able to view the fireflies. Guests are asked not to catch fireflies or touch them, to turn off all lights, and to use only a red light during the show. As the sky grew dim beginning around 8:45, thousands of fireflies began flashing in the hills. It reminded me of instruments warming up for an orchestra, thousands all flashing here and there. This precursor to the real show may have been my favorite part of the evening because you could see the fireflies AND the forest. The night sky became darker still, and then they stopped with nothing happening at all. A ranger came and said, "That's all folks." (as a joke to make everyone panic). The ranger explained that the fireflies warm up and then calm down before the show. And again, just as if attending an outdoor summer musical, the crowd is chatting, and then, as the show begins, the crowd grows silent in amazement. Everyone was in awe. It's almost more than the brain can take in. The number of fireflies flashing in unison is overwhelming, much like watching the finale to a fireworks show for hours  as close as you can watch it - with no noise, just nature - wind, the rushing water, and occasional birds chirping. We were amazed at the millions of bright fireflies flashing; it reminded me of riding Space Mountain if one were to ride it for hours without the actual ride. What Are Synchronous Fireflies? And, are they the only fireflies at Elkmot? That evening, two species of fireflies put on a show: blue ghost fireflies with a soft blue light that fly slowly and stay lit, creating a soft trail of light, and the synchronous fireflies that are like bright white lights and flash in unison. I was surprised at how bright they were, almost appearing to be white, not warm yellow like home, though the camera caught the yellow. During the show, the females start low to the ground flashing, and the males are up in the tree canopy. As they communicate, they try to find a mate, slowly merging until you are surrounded. I stood up several times from my chair, and it was 360 degrees featuring millions  of fireflies all flashing at once. Our family spent time in Elkmont Campground from 6 pm - 11:30 pm... and then we were ready for bed. As we were leaving, the fireflies were still flashing. Then, the question everyone asks: Are they really  just in the Elkmont Campground section of the national park? And, the answer is, yes. As we left, when you turn away from the campground, you no longer see them. How to See the Synchronous Fireflies of the Great Smoky Mountains: Enter the NPS Lottery in late April. Winners are notified via email in May. The viewing opportunity will occur in June (date TBD). Camp at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during Firefly viewing week in June. Yes, the synchronous fireflies are specifically in the Elkmont Campground of the park. Many visitors comment that they see fireflies throughout the national park and the region during the summer, and they do. There are 19 species of fireflies at GSMNP, however the synchronous fireflies specifically mate in the Elkmont Campground. Congaree National Park in South Carolina is also home to synchronous fireflies. They host their lottery from late March to early April and their viewing is from late May to early June. Learn more about Congaree National Park's firefly lottery here. More Synchronous Firefly locations and viewing information. Firefly Experience by Radim Schreiber Firefly Experience by Radim Schreiber One of my favorite memories in the National Parks was seeing the synchronous fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains . I first learned of these amazing fireflies through the photography of artist Radim Schreiber. Schreiber's book is a masterpiece capturing the beauty of this natural phenomenon. Learn How to See the Synchronous Fireflies in the Smoky Mountains here. Synchronous Fireflies: An Ethereal Experience in Tennessee Adventure is characterized by extraordinary experiences. • Best Time to Visit Smoky Mountains: A Month-by-Month Guide

Summer at Dollywood Our family loves visiting the Smoky Mountains. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited National Park in the United States, and Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg both offer wonderful attractions for vacationers. So, how do you choose the best time of year to visit the Smoky Mountains? Follow these tips to choose the perfect time for your Smoky Mountain Vacation: Choosing the Best Time to Visit the Smoky Mountains: Summer Fall Winter Spring Peak Times of Year Ranked by Week How to Choose the Best Time to Visit the Smokies Summer (June-August) Whitewater rafting in the Smoky Mountains The classic choice, but here's what most travel sites won't tell you: while those warm days are perfect for whitewater rafting (my kids' favorite), you're looking at temperatures that can soar into the 90s in lower elevations. I've learned to schedule our hikes before 10 AM when the morning mist still clings to the mountains and the crowds haven't descended on popular trails like Laurel Falls . Pros: All attractions are fully operational. Longest daylight hours for activities Perfect weather for water activities Wildflowers in full bloom Firefly viewing in early June (a truly magical experience) Cons: Peak hotel rates (I've seen rooms double in price) Gridlock in Gatlinburg, especially on weekends 2-hour waits at popular restaurants Humidity that can make hiking challenging Afternoon thunderstorms can disrupt plans. Fall (September-November) Autumn in the Smoky Mountains This is when the mountains truly shine, but timing is everything. Mid-October isn't always the peak color - it varies yearly. Follow this guide from the National Park Service to anticipate fall color. Pros: Breathtaking fall foliage Pleasant hiking temperatures Less humidity Better hotel availability (except peak foliage weekends) Perfect weather for outdoor activities Cons: Fall color weekends draw massive crowds. Unpredictable peak foliage timing Some water attractions begin closing. Higher lodging rates during peak color Shorter daylight hours Winter (December-February) The Inn at Christmas Place in Gatlinburg, Tennessee Winter in the Smokies can be magical. Christmas decorations and events are a highlight of the season. After Christmas, you can enjoy the area and its beauty without crowds. Ober Mountain's ski area is perfect for beginners, and the heated indoor attractions in Pigeon Forge feel extra cozy. Pros: Lowest lodging rates (except holidays) Snow-capped mountain views Minimal crowds Cozy cabin atmosphere Skiing and tubing at Ober Mountain Cons: Some trails and roads close in bad weather Limited hours at attractions Unpredictable road conditions Some restaurants close for the season Cold temperatures can limit outdoor activities. Spring (March-May) Spring in the Smoky Mountains This is my favorite time to visit. The spring wildflowers are stunning, and the weather is generally mild. However, spring break timing can make or break your experience. Pros: Dogwoods and wildflowers blooming. Moderate temperatures Waterfalls at peak flow Lower lodging rates (except spring break) All attractions are beginning to open. Cons: Frequent rain showers Spring break crowds (varies by region) Unpredictable weather Some attractions are still on limited hours. Possible frost at higher elevations Peak Times of Year (Ranked from Least to Most Crowded) March – Spring Break Crowds Last Week of March:  (Late spring breaks, but tapering off) First Week of March:  (Early spring breaks begin) Third Week of March:  (Continued high crowds, many K-12 schools on break) Second Week of March:  (Peak spring break for many colleges and some K-12 schools) May – End of School Year Crowds First Week of May  (Least crowded, pre-summer travel) Second Week of May  (Mostly normal, few early breaks) Third Week of May  (Few schools ending, moderate crowds) Fourth Week of May  (Some schools begin to let out, pre-holiday travel) Final Week of May  (Memorial Day weekend starts the summer travel season) June – Start of Summer Crowds First Week of June  (Weekend only, moderate crowds) Second Week of June  (First full week of summer break for many schools) Final Week of June  (Busy, but many wait for July 4th) Fourth Week of June  (Full summer crowds) Third Week of June  (Peak summer travel as most schools are out) August – Back-to-School Crowds Final Week of August  (Most schools back, least crowded) Fourth Week of August  (Crowds thinning as schools reopen) Third Week of August  (Some schools back, others finishing summer) First Week of August  (Early August weekend travel) Second Week of August  (Last big vacation push before school starts) December – Holiday Break Crowds First Week of December  (Post-Thanksgiving lull, least crowded) Second Week of December  (Pre-holiday calm, moderate crowds) Third Week of December  (Schools start holiday break) Final Week of December  (New Year’s Eve spike) Christmas Week of December  (Christmas week — peak holiday crowds) How to Choose the Timing of Your Smoky Mountain Vacation Wisely: Old Mill at Cades Cove Avoid major holidays unless you enjoy crowds. Spring Break, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas week are particularly busy. Consider visiting during shoulder seasons (early March, late April, early November) for better rates and fewer crowds. Book accommodations far in advance for fall color season - I'm talking 6-12 months out. If possible, research spring break, fall break, and school schedules for surrounding states to avoid peak crowds. If you can visit while others are in school, take advantage of this. Check attraction schedules - some have reduced hours or close entirely during winter months. Expert Strategy: Book midweek visits whenever possible. The difference in crowd levels between a Tuesday and a Saturday can be staggering. I've saved up to 40% on lodging with this simple switch. Remember, there's no "perfect" time to visit the Smokies - each season offers its unique magic. The key is matching the season to your family's preferences and flexibility. A well-timed visit makes all the difference between a stressful vacation and a memorable adventure. • Why Are They Called the Smoky Mountains? A Love Letter to America's Most Visited National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the Summer My friends know that I passionately love my home state, Missouri , but the Smoky Mountains hold another piece of my heart. There's something truly ethereal about standing at an overlook in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, watching that signature mist create "Blue Smoke" in the mountain peaks. As someone who has visited these mountains many times, I've come to understand why they've captured the hearts of millions, including my own. One of our family's many visits to Great Smoky Mountains National Park The Mystery of the Blue Smoke The first time I witnessed the "smoke" rising from these mountains, I was mesmerized. The Cherokee nation poetically named this effect "Shaconage" (Sha-Kon-O-Hey), which means "Land of the Blue Smoke. " Dolly Parton wrote and performed the song "Blue Smoke," celebrating this trademark effect of her beloved Smoky Mountains. But what exactly causes this natural phenomenon? The famous "smoke" you see in the Great Smoky Mountains comes primarily from the trees themselves. The trees and vegetation in the forest release natural vapors that create a fog-like effect and scatter blue light from the sky, creating that signature blue haze. The Smokies are especially good at showing off this effect because they've got the perfect recipe: lots of rain, sunshine, high humidity, and calm air that lets the haze hang around. While there is some air pollution in the mix (about 20% of the haze), the vast majority is just nature doing its thing. The good news is that pollution levels are at historic lows thanks to the National Park Service's efforts, and there's a plan to get the parks back to completely natural haze levels by 2064. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Great Smoky Mountains National Park Through the Seasons: A Guide to their Colors Spring's Awakening Every March through May, the mountains come to life with wildflowers, fresh green leaves in the trees, and wildlife. We love watching mama bears and their cubs in the spring. The fields are fresh with wildflowers - white trillium, pink lady slippers, and violet irises. Spring is the season of new life in the Smoky Mountains. Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the Summer Summer's Deep Greens and Vibrant Blue Smoke In the summer, the Blue Smoke is more pronounced. The trees are vibrant green and the summer sunrise and sunset create a perfect blue-gray mist over the mountains. Autumn in the Smoky Mountains Autumn's Grand Finale Autumn in the Smokies is truly breathtaking. Beginning in late September, the change starts. Sugar maples become a vibrant orange, hickories shine with a golden yellow, and red maples showcase their name with crimson hues. By the middle of October, the entire region is decorated with autumn colors. Winter in the Forest Winter's Quiet Beauty While many overlook winter in the Smokies, it is a truly beautiful time of year. When snow falls in the winter, the forest is cloaked in a blanket of white. On cold mornings, the blue smoke seems more pronounced against the stark winter landscape. Horses in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the Spring Why These Mountains Capture Our Hearts What makes the Smokies so uniquely beautiful isn't just their colors or famous mist—it's their accessibility and diversity. Unlike the towering peaks of the Rockies or the rugged Sierra Nevada, these ancient mountains feel more cozy and approachable. Everything feels more homey and inviting in the Smoky Mountains. With more than 19,000 documented species living in the Smoky Mountains, every visit reveals something new: a wildflower, a salamander, wild horses, fireflies , or a black bear and her cubs. Waterfall Great Smoky Mountains National Park Whether it's hiking , rafting , experiencing the famous synchronous fireflies , horseback rides in Cades Cove , chasing waterfalls, or driving along the Roaring Fork Motor Trail, every visit to the Smokies brings something new. The Mill in Cades Cove: Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the Spring Every time we visit GSMNP, we love it even more. It's no wonder millions return annually to experience their beauty. These mountains are more than just a destination; they are a home away from home. • Exploring Kentucky's Moonbow at Cumberland Falls State Park

Rainbows are a welcome sight after a summer rain. We love spotting rainbows on the horizon as the sun comes out, but we don't usually see them at night. When a rainbow occurs at night as a result of moonlight, it is known as a moonbow. These rare phenomena only occur in a few places in the world, and one of those places is Kentucky. Moonbow at Cumberland Falls State Park, KY Discovering Moonbows I first learned of the moonbow phenomenon when studying Africa with my daughters. We learned that Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is home to a moonbow or a rainbow that appears in the mist of a waterfall due to the light of a full moon. I was intrigued, so this led to researching and learning that Yosemite National Park experiences moonbows occasionally, but the waterfall isn't reliable as it depends on rainfall. However, there is a reliable moonbow in the United States, and it can be found in Kentucky. Cumberland Falls State Park and the Moonbow The Lodge at Cumberland Falls State Park, KY Cumberland Falls State Park is one of the prettiest locations in Kentucky's state park system, with a beautiful rustic lodge overlooking a river, hiking trails, equestrian trails, and waterfalls. It is also the only place in North America with a reliable moonbow.  Moonbow at Cumberland Falls State Park, KY So, on a quest to see a moonbow firsthand, our family trekked to Kentucky. On our trip, we experienced some of the state's landmarks including horse races at Churchill Downs, Natural Bridge State Park, Cumberland Gap Trail, and the Louisville Slugger Museum. However, the highlight of our Kentucky visit was our stay at Cumberland Falls and its famous moonbow. Cumberland Falls State Park, KY Cumberland Falls , considered the Niagara of the South, produces beautiful daytime rainbows from many angles. Daytime Rainbow at Cumberland Falls State Park, KY Tips for Cumberland Falls State Park : Stay during a full moon to view the moonbow. Follow this link  for photography tips. Lodging options at Cumberland Falls State Park include hotel rooms at DuPont Lodge, Cabins (pay attention to accessibility. This is an older park and some cabins have 50+ steep steps leading to their entrance), and tent camping. Horseback rides are available. The park is home to many hiking trails. You may climb the fire tower to get a bird's eye view of the area. Outdoor enthusiasts love the beautiful Kentucky woods, hiking trails, and, of course, the river. The waterfalls (there are several to enjoy) offer a peaceful setting to enjoy nature. This state park is a jewel in its own right, with the moonbow adding a truly unique experience, making this a bucket list must.
