- Elephant Rocks State Park: First-Timer’s Guide to Missouri’s Natural Wonder
Our family loves exploring our home state of Missouri, and one of our all-time favorite places is Elephant Rocks State Park . This is one of the most beautiful destinations in Missouri. The park's gigantic granite boulders resembling elephants are a fun natural playground to explore. We enjoy the hiking trails, the unique rock formations, and the breathtaking views. We are impressed by the enormous size of the boulders. It is thought that a volcanic eruption from Mount Eldfell in the past 15,000 years led to the creation of the basalt columns that make up Elephant Rocks. These columns were formed as the lava cooled and shrank. Follow this guide to plan your getaway to Elephant Rocks State Park , a Missouri must-see for nature lovers. What to Expect at Elephant Rocks State Park Highlights of the Park: Elephant Rock State Park, Missouri The Elephant Rocks Trail : A 1-mile, wheelchair-accessible trail offering close-up views of the iconic boulders. The loop trail is easy to navigate and features interpretive signs that share information about the geology and history of the area. The "Elephants" : Massive granite boulders, some weighing hundreds of tons, formed over 1.5 billion years ago. They’re perfect for climbing, exploring, or photographing. Braille Trail : Integrated into the Elephant Rocks Trail, this inclusive feature provides textured surfaces and signage for visually impaired visitors. Engine House Ruins Trail : A shorter, less than 0.5-mile trail that leads to the remnants of an old engine house, a nod to the area’s quarrying history. When to Visit Elephant Rocks State Park Each season brings its charm to Elephant Rocks State Park: Winter : Experience a serene and uncrowded park, perfect for photography. Be cautious of icy trails. Spring : Enjoy wildflowers and mild temperatures, ideal for hiking. Summer : Enjoy shaded picnic areas but plan for morning visits to avoid the heat. Fall : Witness the beautiful fall foliage, making it one of the best times to visit. The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, with free admission. How Much Time to Spend Plan to spend 2-4 hours exploring the park. This allows enough time for hiking the trails, taking photos, and enjoying a picnic. There are approximately 35 horses in two herds. Over the years, we have seen the horses at Echo Bluff State Park and Round Spring. If you ask the rangers at the state park, they will give updates on the horses. We frequently find them in the early morning at the state park, and mid-afternoon around Round Spring, though their habits are not consistent. Wild Horses of Shannon County at Echo Bluff State Park The Bureau of Land Management protects wild horses throughout the United States, and two herds live in Southern Missouri. Boat Tour of Bonne Terre Mine, Missouri: Bonne Terre Mine, Missouri On the one-hour tour of Bonne Terre Mine , visitors enter the mine (and exit) via a 65-step staircase. The tour guides visitors through the mine's five levels, following the ancient mule paths where miners labored more than 150 years ago. We discovered that mules, known for their stubborn nature, were perfect for the job not just because of their strength, but also because they understood their boundaries. Unlike horses, who are loyal and will keep working to satisfy their owner, mules will pause for food and rest, which is more beneficial for their health. Bonne Terre Mine, Missouri The highlight of the tour is the expansive seventeen-mile-long Billion Gallon Lake. This is an engineering marvel and a natural wonder, illuminated by an impressive 500,000 watts of stadium lighting. Guides share the rich history and geological significance of the area. Among the notable sites are the iconic No. 1 Elevator, which once served as a crucial access point for miners., old ore carts, that transported lead ore, and weathered catwalks. The tour emphasizes both the geological and economic history of the mine for the community.
